Accessing Medical Care for Mental Health Conditions in North Central Texas

Are you or someone you know struggling with mental health conditions and in need of medical care in North Central Texas? There are a variety of programs and resources available to help individuals access the care they need. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) contracts with 37 local mental health authorities (LMHA) and two local behavioral health authorities (LBHA) to provide mental health services in Texas communities. For children ages 0 to 5, Help Me Grown North Texas is available at 844-NTX-KIDS. The Care House (adolescent relief unit) offers short-term residential treatment to 13- to 17-year-olds experiencing a mental health crisis.

Affordable and easily accessible behavioral health care including psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and individual and group therapy services are also available. The ECI includes early intervention case management, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language, education for caregivers, and support services for infants and toddlers with developmental delays or medical conditions that cause developmental delays and who reside in the SAISD, ECISD, HISD, SISD, and SSISD school districts of Bexar County. The Mom Program is an intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program aimed at pregnant women and mothers of minor children, including those seeking to be reunited with their children in the custody of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. A partnership with the SAPD Mental Health Unit brings together doctors with officers to care for people with mental health needs who frequently use 911 and other emergency resources.

This program was started in the largest cities in Texas to create a community network of support programs for the chronically homeless. Intensive residential substance abuse treatment program is also available for pregnant women and mothers of minor children. The aftercare staff monitors and makes recommendations regarding the provision of care while the client is in the hospital. Referrals are made by the Texas Office of Corrections for Offenders with Mental or Medical Disabilities (TCOOMMI), the Department of Community Oversight and Corrections, and other sources.

Adult day care provides meals, medical care, medication supervision, transportation, social and leisure activities, and personal care services. A jail diversion program designed to offer a treatment alternative to arrest for public intoxicants is also available. This program uses motivational interviewing techniques to intervene and engage the person, offering direct access to treatment if desired. Fellow veterans help veterans find community resources, take veterans to the hospital in Virginia, help them search for employment, organize forums and celebrations for veterans and their families, and advise veterans at the Veterans Outreach Court. Donations to the MHMR Foundation can be meaningful and lasting donations in memory or in honor of a loved one, or carefully planned donations. It helps people in drug courts for serious and minor crimes improve their quality of life and further reduce recidivism by incorporating community case management, psychiatric medication management, counseling and professional training services.

A multidisciplinary, multi-institutional team organized to provide comprehensive care coordination with the goal of reducing dependence on emergency services by the most acute people in Bexar County is also available. Services include evaluation, vocational training, counseling, intensive case management, medication training and support, psychiatric evaluation and medication management, caregiver training, family partner support, and comprehensive facilitation. In North Central Texas there are many programs available to help individuals with mental health conditions access medical care.
